A LARGE crowd gathered at the National Opera House for the launch of Wexford newest drama group, Scalder Theatre Company, which is being run by stage stalwarts Andy Doyle and Michael Dunbar.
The launch fell on one of the busiest artistic weekends in the town this year with a number of other drama groups treading the boards in various locations around the county and country, showing just how healthy the scene is in Wexford.
The group was launched by Mayor of Wexford, Cllr. Ger Carthy who wished both men the very best of luck with their future endeavours. Both Michael and Andy spoke of their backgrounds and how it had led to the creation of Scalder Theatre Company.
Finally Billy Roche spoke about the group’s first play, his own new play ‘Of Mornington’ which tells the story of Phil, an aging former snooker champion and his interactions with Mike, a young dreamer and Shauna, a café owner with a shady past.
The play will star Andy Doyle, Jack Matthews and Gail Jordan.
Speaking to this newspaper, Andy Doyle said they were delighted with the turnout considering the sheer abundance of events that were on all over the county: “There was a lovely feeling of good will and positivity. Lots of people hung on after the formalities as well to have a glass of wine and chat.”
Of the play, Andy said: “There is plenty of the Billy Roche that people know and love but they are also three unusual characters by his normal standard. It’s a real, polished gem that centres around the idea of hope and redemption for all of the characters.”
The play will have its world premier at the National Opera House next month.
