Mick Conway, from MCV Sports Print & Design, in New Ross, was among those who were evacuated from Old Trafford ahead of last weekends cancelled clash between Manchester United and Bournemouth.
A WELL known New Ross businessman was one of thousands of Manchester United fans caught up in a bomb scare at Old Trafford last weekend.
Mick Conway, from MVC Sports Print & Design, was among a party of 50 people who travelled over from Ireland to see United take on Bournemouth.
However, the game was called off shortly before kick-off when a suspect device was discovered in the ground.
Speaking to the Echo, Mr. Conway said at first people weren’t sure what was happening but it soon became clear that an evacuation had been called and everyone left the ground.
While the device, ultimately, turned out to be a dummy explosive accidentally left behind following a security training exercise during the previous week officials at the ground took the right action on Saturday in calling for the evacuation.
Such was the seriousness with which people took the threat that Mr. Conway said everyone ran away from the ground once they got outside.
A controlled explosion was carried out on the device which British police said was accidentally left behind by a private firm.
Mr. Conway is expanding his business in New Ross in the coming weeks with the opening of a new sports shop and while he hopes to attract a lot of visitors to the business he said he hopes the opening won’t be “quite as exciting” as what happened at Old Trafford.
