CHILDREN FROM Donard National School have been crowned winners of the 26th annual Credit Union Schools Quiz competition after emerging victorious in the junior section.
The announcement was made following a close final that saw 100 teams battle it out in the RDS at the weekend.
The event is run by the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU) and attracts more than 25,000 participants each year which makes the Donard children’s achievement all the more remarkable.
The local and regional knockout rounds were organised by volunteers from 400 credit unions throughout the 32 counties.
Under the watchful eye of quiz-master, and radio and TV personality, Aidan Power, the local children put in an exemplary performance to see off all other challengers in the hotly contested U11 Junior Category.
The team, whcih was representing Enniscorthy Credit Union, was composed of Shane Kehoe, Leah Murphy, Bridin Quigley, and Cormac Fleming.
Speaking at the event, ILCU President, Brian McCrory, said: “Every school child who participated in all rounds of the Credit Union Schools Quiz this year should be hugely proud of their achievement. I would like to congratulate each of them, along with their teachers and parents, for the time they dedicated and the effort they demonstrated.”.
He said special mention should be given to the finalists who he said were all outstanding.
“The competition was fiercely fought in the end and our two winning teams are extremely deserving of the title,” he said.
The questions for the quiz are compiled each year by primary school teachers and cover topics such as geography, history, music, literature and sport.
The Donard team won €1,250 for their school.
