A documentary film about St. Mary’s Church, in New Ross, has won a major national award

A SHORT documentary film about St. Mary’s Church, in New Ross, that was created by young people involved in a short film-making workshop in St. Michael’s Theatre has won a major national award.

The documentary won the Radharc Trust Award at this year’s Fresh Film Festival in Limerick – which took place last week.

The young film-makers won the award on Thursday much to the delight of everyone involved and the management and staff in the theatre.

The film includes interviews with Peter McDonald and Jenny Nuttall, from New Ross Historical Society, on the grounds of the church which is one of the most historically significant landmarks in the town.

The film records the history and folklore of one of Ireland’s first Gothic churches.

A spokesperson for the theatre said the film: “Celebrates the role the church has played in the local community for the past 800 years and captures the church’s special atmosphere and beauty.”

The film was first shown at the Irish Film Institute, Dublin on March 8 and will be screened again at the Wexford Widescreen Festival on May 6 – in St. Michael’s Theatre, New Ross.

The young film-makers involved were: Anwyn Breen-Fleming, Leigh Carroll, Conor Chapman, Fiachra Coughlan, Pierce Doyle, Brea Dunne, Saoirse Hughes and Declan Murphy.

The free workshop was facilitated by Therese Dalton and funded by The Arts Council, The Arts Department of Wexford County Council and St. Michael’s Theatre.
